…is much harder than you think. Or rather, it’s much harder than I thought.

Yes, tweeting is fun! Updating your Facebook status is fun! Networking on LinkedIn is fun! Finally working with a business on its social media strategy is fun!

Note: As sarcastic as I feel like that sounded, I truly am having a lot of fun researching. But I digress.

There’s certainly more to social media marketing than sitting at a computer updating and monitoring social networking platforms all day and most of the night (because we all know that social media marketing isn’t your typical 9-5 job).

Many other steps need to be taken before any social media marketer can even begin to think about content generation:

  1. Learn the business with which you are working
  2. Determine the target audience
  3. Assess current social media use (note baseline metrics, etc.)
  4. Research competitor strategy
  5. Create objectives
  6. Develop tactics for reaching objectives
  7. HAVE FUN GETTING SOCIAL!
  8. Analyze results

These are all of the things that I’ve found myself doing for my client. Hmm, I feel a series on social media planning coming on…stay tuned.

UPDATE: I found another article that talks a little more about the social media background check phenomenon. Check out this blog post on Social Media Sean.
